Balfour Optical in Amarillo Discusses Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can result in vision loss and blindness if left untreated. In fact, glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness. More than 3 million people in the United States have glaucoma, but only about half know it. The condition damages the optic nerve, which transmits information about the images your eyes see to your brain for processing. While there is no cure for glaucoma, proper treatment from our Amarillo eye doctor can halt further loss of vision.

Eye pressure is a major cause of optic nerve damage. A clear fluid flows in the space at the front of the eye. The eye supplies a steady supply of fluid, or aqueous humor, which nourishes the tissues of the eye. Excess fluid leaves the eye through a drain, known as the open angle. Once in the open angle, the fluid passes through spongy meshwork to leave the eye. Pressure can build inside the eye if fluid does not drain properly through the open angle. This pressure, known as intraocular pressure, damages the optic nerve situated at the back of the eye.

There are several types of glaucoma and glaucoma causes, including open angle glaucoma that occurs when the meshwork inside the open angle becomes less efficient at draining fluid. Angle-closure glaucoma, also called narrow-angle glaucoma or closed-angle glaucoma, occurs when the eye’s iris blocks the drain.

Eye Doctor in Amarillo Discusses Glaucoma Symptoms

Many patients with the eye condition are surprised when our eye doctor in Amarillo diagnoses them with glaucoma because certain types of glaucoma do not always cause symptoms. The most common type of glaucoma, open-angle glaucoma, does not cause symptoms in the earliest stages of the disease. Symptoms of angle-closure glaucoma can come about quickly and can include vision that is suddenly blurry, severe eye pain, a headache, nausea or vomiting, and seeing rainbow-colored rings or halos around lights.

Amarillo Eye Doctor Provides Glaucoma Treatment

Our Amarillo eye doctor provides eye disease diagnosis and glaucoma treatment. We perform several tests, such as a visual acuity test to measure how well you see at various distances, visual field tests to check your peripheral vision, and a dilated eye exam that allows our eye doctor to see your optic nerve and check for signs of damage. Our optometrist may perform tonometry to test the pressure inside your eye.

Glaucoma treatment includes medication in the form of eye drops, laser therapy, and surgery. Medications are the first line of treatment and can halt the progression of glaucoma to slow down vision loss.
