Here at Balfour Optical, we stress the importance of routine eye exams. This exam is essential for catching any diseases or disorders that threaten your eyesight -- especially since sight-robbers such as macular degeneration and glaucoma can cause serious destruction before you actually realize it. Ideally, adults and school-age children should have an Amarillo eye exam every year. Younger children should receive exams at 6 months, age 3 and by age 6. You should also schedule an immediate eye exam if you're experiencing any sudden or frightening changes in your vision.
In the first part of your Amarillo eye exam, we analyze your medical history, including any history of eye or vision problems, and discuss any unusual symptoms you're currently experiencing. We may also take your blood pressure (a factor in some eye disorders). Diabetes is another underlying condition that requires close attention from our Amarillo optometrists, Dr. Fitch or Dr. Hollingsworth.
Eye health testing involves the use of specialized instruments to look at the eye's structures in detail. The front of the eyes, including the lens, iris, sclera, and cornea, can be examined using an illuminated magnifying device called a slit lamp. We need to dilate your pupils to view as much of the retina, retinal blood vessels and optic nerves as possible. Our Amarillo optometrists will administer medicated eye drops to accomplish this. (Your eyes will be unusually sensitive to light immediately following the exam; bring sunglasses with you or ask us to provide a pair.) We also check your internal eye pressure for signs of possible glaucoma.
Eye function is just as important as eye health when it comes to getting the most out of your vision. If the eyes are not coordinating with each other or communicating with the brain's vision center correctly, you can experience anything from blurriness to loss of depth perception. Our eye function exams can evaluate:
If you are suffering from an eye function issue, there's a very good chance that the problem can be corrected by corrective lenses, vision therapy exercises, and other procedures to get your eyes and brain in sync with each other.
Vision testing is yet another critical aspect of your Amarillo eye exam. By evaluating your ability to read letters on an eye chart, we can discover whether you have a refractive error such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism or presbyopia. If you do, we can use an instrument called a phoropter to find your ideal prescription for glasses or contact lenses. We can then fit you for the appropriate eyewear right here at our Amarillo eye center.
